Our Green Piece…How It’s Made at Keys!

Clean, Caring, Concerned and Diligent!

Everyone want to know these days what is in your products, what is not in your products and how does the making of your products effect the environment.  I thought it might be lighter to use the title Green Piece with an ‘i’ because that is what the PR people call the eco statement that a company offers.  Often these are full of $5 dollar words and platitudes.  So, I have attempted to inform here without using too many words or big words that have no meaning.  I am sure I have missed something, so make sure you use the comment box to ask me your questions.

Cooking for your dog with Koda OmegaLife

Published on May 12, 2013

stir-fryCooking with OmegaLife

By Bob Root

Koda OmegaLife is a product I developed as a vegan replacement for fish oil for dogs.  The reason we developed OmegaLife was to provide Omega 3, 6 & 9′s without the vitamin A that i found in fish oil.  Vitamin A can be toxic to humans and dogs if in too high a level.

I recently had a question escalated to me by our customer service team.  It was, “Can I cook my dogs food using OmegaLife Oil?”  The simple answer is, “Of Coarse!”

There are a number of our customers that feed their dogs using a “Raw” diet while others cook or partially cook the dogs food.  If your recipe has you slow cooking or even stir-frying your dogs meat and vegetables, use Omegalife instead of oil.  Estimate how many meals you are preparing times your dogs weight divided by 10 to determine how may squirts of oil you use.  (For example, if you are cooking 1o meals and your dog weighs 10 pounds, it would be 10 squirts of OmegaLife in the food).  If you are preparing the food as a “Raw” diet, it is okay to also squirt the OmegaLife into the food based on the above formula.

Remember in all cases, it is one squirt for each ten pounds times the estimated number of meals.

Just remember that you do not want to overheat the OmegaLife.  Put the amount in a pan, turn on the heat and add the food.

Personally, I have been cooking for Jasper since the day he joined our family.  The reason is that, “I know what is in his food when I make it.”  The irony is that it is less expensive as well.

Any questions?  Send me a comment and I will respond.

Where are all the travel sizes and sample?

Published on April 18, 2013

bob_topazBy Bob Root, Keys CTO

Our factory move and spin-up went amazingly well.  Like moving your home, there are things that you save, somethings you move and somethings you get rid of.  This is true for factories as well.  Think of it as having the opportunity to change some things and start new.

From nearly the day we have opened for business, we have provided smaller versions of our products for use as sample and for traveling.  This has been pretty much a losing proposition for us and at the same time we looked at sample as a good way for people to try our products.  I know how great our products are, but there is nothing like trying something to see if you like the product or if it works for you.

travelers

Keys Old Sample Packaging

Our samples and travel sizes evolved over time.  We went from squeeze bottles to tubes for some products while our soaps and RediCare stayed in bottle form.  I must admit that one of my biggest design headaches are the samples and travel sizes because they are extremely hard to produce, actually travel and ship poorly and they are expensive to produce.  So, when we decided to move, one of the things I decided to change was our sample and travel size products.  The problem was that I did not know how I wanted to change the packaging and the move itself occupied most of my days for the last month.  About two weeks ago it dawned on me that there might be a way so I started to explore some things with our digital label partner to see if he could print using his extremely high tech HP label printer to print on continuous film.  When he said yes, I went to work on my idea.

Moving a factory and only being down for ten days is what we call a BHAG…or, a Big Hairy Audacious Goal.  Re-architecting a sampling and travel product design and system is even a bigger BHAG.  The critical link was a way to do our digital design labels in film format and when I knew we could do it, I searched the world for a small format packet filling system that would let me design variable size packets with enough product so that people could be assured they liked our products and that they would work for them.

Here is the Plan

Solar-Rxsachet

New Sample Packet

The way we will proceed with our sampling and travel size program will be to create oversized sachet packets that will give you the opportunity to try many of the Keys products to make sure you like them and that they work for you.  We have ordered a wonderful machine that is a self-contained micro factory that will turn thin digitally printed film into packets that will be heat sealed and notched for each opening.  Product will fill directly into these packets and be sealed in a closed sterile environment.  They will then be cut and conveyored into bins for distribution, packed with orders and able to be sent to our sales team for in-store demonstrations and trade shows.  As added information, our older tube samples were about 15ml (0.5 ounces).  Our hope is that we will make packets that are the same size.  We are in tests now to see if that works in the real-world because there are no caps for these pouches.  The standard films are not foldable, so it might not be practical.

For those of you that are interested, here is what the machine looks like.

horizontal-pouch-packing-machinery

Packet Filling & Sealing Machine

Briefly, the film is shown on the left entering the machine. a devise folds the film in half and then a heat sealer seals the edge to create a tube.  Then the packet is filled from the hopper and the bottom and top edge is sealed.  Then a combination cutter and notcher creates the individual packet.  It is then conveyored out to a bin.

So When?

We expect the machine to be delivered in the next 30 to 60 days and should be operational in a day or two after we receive it.  We will be preprinting rolls of film so that they arrive before the machine is here.  Once we start producing, the machine will be able to make about 60 packets a minute or 1 every second.  So, I am sorry that we have no travel sizes or sample now, but they will be flowing as soon as we get the machine and have it running.

Now for the Future

One of the major goals for this machine will be to create single use packets to be boxed together.  The idea is to sell a box containing 10 or 20 packets that can be used for travel or to give to friends.  Same product as our full size, just in a more convenient size for pocket, purse or to send.  Once we have the machine running our samples, we will beging working to offer some of our products in boxed sets.

ECO-Friendly

Our new packets are going to be much more ECO-friendly.  The plastic used is easier to produce and it is food grade.  They will be printed with soy based ink and are fully recyclable.  Far less plastic also means that they are more earth friendly.  One of my engineers did a quick calculation and these packets will only contain 2% of the pastic of our previous bottles and tubes.  My guess is that is a little high.  I think it is closer to 1.8%  :-)

EWG and How to Read Labels

Published on January 24, 2013

Our friends at the Environmental Working Group have put together a new video about the ingredients on the labels of personal care products.

Ever looked at the labels on your shampoos, moisturizers and cosmetics? Do you really know what chemicals you’re putting on your body?

Most Americans use about 10 personal care products a day. And they think that the government is making sure these products are safe – but the scary truth is, it’s not. That’s why Environmental Working Group scientists have put together easy-to-use tips on how to read labels on personal care products. Check out the new video featuring EWG’s Senior Analyst Nneka Leiba on what to watch out for before you buy.

Announcing KODA – Keys for Dogs

Published on September 24, 2012

KODA

by Wendy Steele

Keys and KODA CEO

For many of our long term customers, you will remember that we created a pet product line many years ago.  The line migrated to crossover products that are good for people and their pets.  Our most popular in this line is and was RediCare.  Our medicinal products grew in popularity over the years.

Our original move into the pet products business was based on an experience with our Bichon “Disney.”  Now about 7 years ago, he returned from a groomer and began pulling out his fur until his skin was bleeding.  We calmed him, got him to a vet and a cortisone shot later, he was on the road to recovery.  We discovered that his reaction was due to an experimental whitening shampoo that the groomer was asked to try by a manufacturer.  It turns out that the shampoo had a near lethal level of Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS).  This was our inspiration to begin making Disney his own shampoo that we affectionately named “Muttineer.”   Eventually, a modified version of the shampoo became know as MetaClean and the line became a cross-over product offering for us.

A little over two years ago, Disney passed away on Valentines Day.  Breeder friends felt for our deep loss and offered us a Bichon pup from a future litter.  We were in Canada near Jasper National Park when we received a call that we would be puppy parents again.  Jasper was born into our crazy lifestyle July two years ago.

This past December, Jasper contracted Blepharitis, which  is an inflammation of the eyelash follicles, along the edge of the eyelid.  Spiking a fever of nearly 106, we feared the worse.  The great doctors at VCA in LaQuinta, California nursed him back to health.  Six weeks of antibiotics and prednisone left him very weak.  When we talked to the doc’s, they knew the treatment to cure him, but they did not know of a wellness program to stabilize and bolster him during the harsh treatments.  It was at this very moment when KODA was born in concept.

As Jasper struggled, we started to look for products that could help him balance the treatments.  It was a lost cause finding products on the market, so we began to make things for him and use some very high end human supplements that friend of Keys make for people.  Dale and Trisca at Health Freedom Nutrition in Reno offered us ideas and solutions.  Most of which were in the form of capsules that Jasper just did not want any part of.  As he got better, we started to add in other things like fish oil and trace minerals.  He did not like fish oil and we were worried about the high levels of Vitamin A found in them.  So, we developed a vegan version of fish oil.  The products and ideas continued as he got better.

Jasper got well and recovered over a period of three months.  It took it toll on this young guy and we are grateful for the docs at VCA.  We do feel that he recovered better with our wellness campaign and it became clear to us that we needed to refocus our attention on pets.  Specifically dogs.

KODA which means friend in Lakota Sioux became the brand name that we chose.  It seemed fitting.  We employed our Keys philosophy of using pharmaceutical grade ingredients in therapeutic proportions for each formula.  Because of Jasper’s illness and our connection to VCA, we decided to connect with the pet insurance industry to find out the top reasons for vet visits.  These top 10 reason that find dogs going to the vet were the map that we used to develop the first 10 products.  They are five topical products and five internal functional supplements.  We also sought ways that administering the products would be easy for the dog and their parents.

KODA is Keys for Dogs, but is a separate company with separate manufacturing.  This is because the Keys factory mostly deals with products that are constructed from oils and essential oils to perform functional uses for the skin.  KODA is made from very exotic extracts that we make in Oregon and we decided to center the KODA product line there.  So, KODA and Keys are related and share science, but KODA is solely focused on dog wellness, life extension and therapies.

Please take a look at KODA if you have a dog or have friends that have a dog.   We have two sites.  If you want to buy, go to www.Keys-Koda.com.  If you want to learn, go to the KODA blog and reference site at www.Koda-Karma.com.

Thanks so much for being a Keys customer and advocate.  We hope you will also become a KODA “friend” as well.

Thanks

Wendy

Your Antibacterial Soap Could Be Harming You

Published on August 16, 2012

Bob Root, Keys Chief Scientist and Founder

When I wrote my book, Chemical-Free Skin Health®, I started to write a chapter about all sorts of chemical preservatives.  As I began to research, it became clear that parabens and Triclosan were amongst the most insidious creepy chemicals.  Like many, I began to see the fact that they kill good and bad bacteria indiscriminately like a bottled version of Viet Nam era “Agent Orange” also known as 24D.  My book and my initial concern were quite different than most people concerned with their use.  My fundamental concern was that both Triclsoan and paraben were cumulative and killed of the probiome/Microbiome on our skin leaving it vulnerable to attack from more aggressive pathogens.  I believe and continue to research the concern that many skin disorders are misdiagnosed as eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis when indeed they are really chemical burns and a reaction to our skin’s good bacteria being eradicated.  Remembering that we have about 10 times more bacteria on our skin than skin cells as our natural symbiotic defense, when you kill them, it is hard for them to return and I believe that the really bad pathogens show up first causing these mimicked skin disorders.

Turns out that my concerns are probably correct and others being concerned with potential hormonal damage are correct as well.  What I did not expect was to read a report that shows that using Triclosan reduces skeletal and heart muscle function by up to 25%.  Keep in mind that this is a first blast of what I feel will be many, but the National Academy of Science take is pretty scary.

Below is a report of the finding by a group known for boiling science down into statements that most of us mere mortals can understand.

Normally, I am one that says read and study more.  My research, my book and now this suggest that you stop using anything with Triclosan until we know differently.  Also, keep in mind that in my book, I revealed that Triclosan is in many more things than just antibacterial soap.  It is in food packaging, antibacterial sportswear, clothing and is injection molded into plastics.

So here we go!

Bob

Your Antibacterial Soap Could Be Harming You

Every time you wash your hands using antibacterial soap you probably feel good because you’re not spreading bugs. But check the bottle and you’ll probably find the soap contains triclosan—a chemical that has just been shown to impair muscle function in humans.

Research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests that triclosan hinders human muscle contractions at the cellular level, as well as inhibiting muscle function in both fish and mice. Isaac Pessah, one of the researchers, told Smithsonian:

“Triclosan is found in virtually everyone’s home and is pervasive in the environment. These findings provide strong evidence that the chemical is of concern to both human and environmental health.”

The study investigated how triclosan affected human heart and skeletal muscle cells in the lab. They found that it disrupted communication between proteins which allow the muscles to function, in turn causing failure of both types of cells. They backed up those experiments with tests on fish and mice. The mice showed reductions in heart muscle function by as much as 25 percent, and a reduction of grip strength of 18 percent. The fish became less effective swimmers after exposure to triclosan.

So what’s to do? There’s no denying that the chemical has some negative effects on muscle function, and the researchers are genuinely concerned about the health risks it poses. Nipavan Chiamvimonvat, another of the researchers, explained to Smithsonian:

“The effects of triclosan on cardiac function were really dramatic. Although triclosan is not regulated as a drug, this compound acts like a potent cardiac depressant in our models.”

Meanwhile, the FDA has declared that there’s no evidence to suggest that using antibac soaps with triclosan offer any health benefits over just washing with conventional soap and water. So, for now at least, it might pay to ditch your fancy handwash.

Itchy Dog? Ditch the Perfume

Published on July 24, 2012

Stop that Itch- Lose the Perfume!

 by Wendy Steele, Keys CEO

How attentive are you when your dog is in distress?

  • Do you hear the incessant scratch, scratch, scratch during the day or at night before bed?
  • Do you visually examine your dog and investigate the area where the itching and scratching is centered before there is redness, irritation or raw sore patches?
  • Have you had the nagging feeling, wondering why your dog is itching and scratching after a bath or grooming session?

Being attentive to your dog’s skin health is relatively simple, you just need to pay attention to all of the clues your dog is already giving you!   Keep an eye on excessive itching and scratching, listen for and actively watch for any patterns (when and where itching occurs) and begin investigating the possible sources of the problem.

As for that nagging feeling about the itching and scratching after your dog’s bath or after a grooming session?   The most likely reason your dog is scratching and itching is directly related to the perfumes, artificial fragrance and harsh ingredients in dog shampoos!

If you are choosing a shampoo based on the smell or the type of fragrance in the product– you are most definitely contributing to your dog’s itching and scratching problem!

You can do a lot to stop the after bath itch – first and foremost – ditch the perfume!

Here are the label-reading basics when determining what shampoo to buy for your dog’s baths and grooming.  Carefully read the product label before buying for your dog.

  • If the label mentions any kind of fragrance – don’t buy it!
  • If the label mentions any kind of sulfate or pseudo sulfate – don’t buy it!
  • Sulfates are aggressive foaming agent chemicals that are difficult to rinse out of your dog’s fur/hair and the residue that cannot be rinsed out will further irritate your dog’s skin causing more itching and scratching after a bath
  • Fragrance and sulfates are a double whammy for your dog and are known irritants that can cause a dog to itch and bite at their fur until there are sores or hot spots
  • If the label mentions any kind of whitening or bleaching agents – don’t buy it!
  • If the label mentions any kind of coloring agents or artificial dyes – don’t buy it!
    • If the ingredients are not clearly listed on the label DO NOT BUY IT

Do not assume that your groomer is aware of irritating ingredients in shampoos and dog perfumes.  In most cases they have no idea what is actually in the products they are using on your dog!  Why? The reason is many manufacturers do NOT fully disclose or label what is actually in a product, nor are they required to be forthcoming by any law, rule or regulation.   Often groomers and dog wash facilities are buying in bulk and buying cheaply made products, based on the lowest cost to them and without a thought given to perfumes, fragrances or harsh sulfates that can irritate your dog’s skin.

Here is a simple and effective way to communicate with your groomer before leaving your dog for a bath or grooming session:

1)      Take your own “clean” shampoo with you to the groomer or dog wash facility-this is the product you have already investigated and reviewed the ingredients

  • Hand your groomer your “clean” shampoo
  • Tell your groomer that this is the only product you want used on your dog
  • Show your groomer the label and let your groomer know that you are doing your best to eliminate potential skin irritants to your dog

2)      Be specific – ask your groomer NOT TO ADD any fragrance or perfume to your dog’s coat after washing!   (Spray perfumes and additives after bath are another cause of dog itching post grooming.)

3)      Thank the groomer for only using the shampoo that you brought with you and for not adding any after bath products on your dog.   Be sure the groomer acknowledges that they understand your simple request!

Reading labels and educating yourself about buying healthier grooming products for your dog is one of the most caring and loving things you can do for your best friend.  Adopting a wellness philosophy, that is taking simple steps to avoid a skin problem before it starts, is a pro-active philosophy for your dog to enjoy a more stress-free, healthy and happy life.

Probiotics & Probiome – Feeding Your Skin!

Published on June 26, 2012

Bob Root, Keys Technologist

Protobiotics and Probiome.  How our skin is similar to our gut!

Our skin is more similar to our gut than most people care to admit when it comes to bacteria.  Often when I start talking about bacteria in our intestines and the relationship to our skin, many people cover their ears and scream TMI TMI (which translates to Too Much Information).  I do not do it to evoke visceral reactions, but to make a point.

I was recently talking to a group of people about a couple of different subjects about the skin.  One was about the probiome on our skin and the other about the importance of mineral balanced hydration.  This article is about our skin’s probiome ECO system and the article on hydration will come soon.

It seems like most of us understand how probiotics work to help digest food.  Not many understand the relationship to our skin.  In fact, the Microbiome Project at National Institutes of Health near Washington DC is changing the way we look at the skin every day.  It is sort of like waking up every morning knowing that you are rewriting text books.  Then in the afternoon all the doctors blast the findings, yet they really do not know, because it is all new.

A Probiome is a tech phrase for rebuilding and restructuring an ECO system.  Our skin’s ECO system is comprised of about ten times more bacterial than skin cells.  The disruption of this ECO system bring imbalance and can foster growth of attacking bacteria than can actually be deadly in some very rare cases.

I talked about the subject in my book, Chemical-Free Skin Health and in this blog article about a young man whose skin ECO System was so compromised by what we now know was from chemicals in his life.  You can read about it here.  http://keys-soap.com/keysblog/?p=1262

Before jumping into my concerns for our skin’s health, it might be easier to use the analogy to how our gut functions and the importance of bacteria.   Basically, most of us take a probiotic to improve our digestion and food assimilation process.  There are a few people that question this need, but they are either uninformed or lead unbelievably clean raw food diets.  Simply, the bacteria in our digestive system works symbiotically with our intestines to convert food into usable fuel for our bodies.  When the colony is reduced or compromised, we suffer digestive problems, bloat and discomfort.  For some it is extremely painful when their intestinal flora drops below tolerable levels.

Many wonder why we need probiotics even if they eat organic foods and watch their diets for what to intake and what not.  The answer is simple that we ingest so many chemicals designed to kill bacteria that the level of bacteria we need in our gut must be supported and fortified.

Think you are not ingesting chemicals?  Think again.

The chemicals we ingest that have a negative effect on the bacteria in our gut ranges from the water we drink to the foods we eat all the way to our personal hygiene products.  For example, if you drink tap water that is chlorinated you reduce the amount of bacteria in your gut.  If you eat foods whose packaging has been treated with Triclosan (like cheese wrappers) you are killing the bacteria in your gut.  If you eat canned food that is lined with BPA based plastic, you are killing the bacteria in your gut.  If you brush your teeth with  conventional toothpaste that contains SLS and/or parabens, you are placing your bacteria in the gut in a world or hurt.  Now here is a wild one, if you handle those thermal receipts that you get at a restaurant or the grocery store, they have some of the highest levels of BPA.  Finally, if you take some medications for different gut disorders, you are probably knocking down your digestive bacteria level by a significant amount.

The skin is even more susceptible….

Remember we have ten times more bacteria on our skin than skin cells.  These bacteria are mostly harmless and work with the skin to protect us from parasites, UV and even airborne chemicals.  They work to reduce fungus and even bad guys like staph and MRSA. The problem is when we disrupt the balance on the skin.  Chemicals that we come in contact with daily both intentionally and unintentionally can and do begin to alter the balance of good bacteria on our skin.  Go too far and we see disorders like eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis begin to flare.  Many of these conditions are diagnosed as these disorders when they are actually chemical burn, irritation and often mimic disorders to a point where prescriptions might be wrongly given.

So imagine what happens when you wash your hands with an antibacterial detergent.  It kills 99%+ of the bacteria on your skin.  Good and bad!  Imagine if you use 15, 20 or even 40 products a day that all of which have 0.5% parabens as a preservative.  The 0.5% is probably not too harmful, but multiply that level by 20 different products and you now have 10% paraben levels on your skin accumulating with daily or multiple daily uses.  I hope you get the picture.

A big part of the problem is that we do not always know when we are being exposed.  Not all manufacturers are in integrity, while other exposures are innocent.  I was in a restaurant and put my forearms on the table while reading the menu.  The table was wet, but I did not pay attention.  My arms began to burn and I realized that the liquid on the table was a disinfectant.  When I asked what it was, they brought me a spray bottle.  There was no real ingredient list.  It did say bleach and that it killed 99.9% of germs.   I washed my arms off with water, but they were definitely burned and I developed a dry rash that literally took a week for it to disappear.  What remained were some small dry patches that still remain today a few months later.

Products like our Reflex, Omni and AguaVit are probiome’s.  Said, they will help only if the agents that are killing the bacteria are removed from the equation.  They can help regenerate an environment where the skin ECO system is rejuvenated, but not if you keep applying agents like parabens and Triclosan to your skin.

To build back the skin’s probiome, the first step is to eliminate anything that disinfects coming in contact with your skin.  These include, parabens, Triclosan, isopropyl alcohol, bleaches and any chemical designed to kill bacteria.  Studies have shown that washing with warm water and towel drying can reduce bacteria significantly without killing it.  Don’t forget to also make sure that you are not using sulfate based laundry detergents with optical brighteners like Tide, All-Clear and Dreft.  The optical brighteners are often phosphorus based and the detergents themselves can kill the good bacteria on your skin.

Personally, I believe that 50% of all diagnosed skin disorders are caused by chemicals in our everyday lives.  Eliminate the cause and there is nothing that needs repair.  Using lotions and even prescriptions that contain chemicals like parabens and Triclosan do more harm than good.

Like I point out in my book, we all have to be the detectives when it comes to our own health.  Most of us recognize the benefits of cleaning up our food intake diet and using probiotics to supplement the normal function of our body.  The skin is no different, but is more tenuous because it is exposed to so many situations.  Try and minimize the junk that comes in contact with your skin and use probiome skin care products to get you back on track.

I look forward to any and all questions.

Bob

Sun Damage – Before and After on the Same Face?

Published on June 7, 2012

Bob Root, Keys Chief Scientist and Founder

As a geek, I must admit a certain amount of frustration with many people espousing opinion when it comes to the skin. Choosing to blinder themselves from the obvious or ignoring simple realities to make a point.

Jay Chiat, the advertising guru that was responsible for much of the Apple Macintosh marketing, once told me that, “Controversy is the #1 tool of marketing.  With the spread of blogs, articles and chat rooms created by the internet, his words are more true that ever.  Couple that concept with the Chinese proverb, “one dog hears something and barks. Then 500 dogs bark because they heard the dog bark,” seems to be the new normal.

Case in point, almost every time Doc Mercola talks about the sun, he claims its benefits and no direct link to damage.  I must admit that he says it using controversial words that slide through the truth.  Well, at least my truth.

So, I am cruising through one of my engineering blogs and saw the article below.  You be the judge for yourself.  I know that I am going to upgrade the side window films to the new 3M SPF 1000 UV coating on all of my vehicles based on the article.

Bob

PS, some people found the image of this 69 year old man a bit hard to look at, so the article with his picture is below the fold.

Build Your Own Regime Program

Published on May 21, 2012

When we began selling Keys online many people asked what did I use, why and when.  We developed Wendy’s Regime collections to give people an idea of what I used during the day and at night.  We developed these kits at a discounted price because we wanted people to use the right products together for the best results.

Over the years, our customers became more familiar with our products and because of their uique needs wanted to build their own regime collections.   So, we listened and now have a build your own regime on our Special Category page on our store.

Basically here is how it works.

Go to the special category by clicking the advert or go to the store special category page by Clicking Here.

Once there, you must select one each of four or more products and you will receive a 20% off discount on all items in your custom collection.  Please remember that you cannot order more than one each of the products offered.  You must buy at least four unique items.  You may buy more, but it can only be one each.

You have to buy at least four (4) products and you can buy more.  They all have to be unique products and only one of each.

The Not New Solar Rx – Improved and Unchanged!

Published on May 11, 2012

The New FDA Sunscreen regulations are about to go into effect.

Last year I wrote and article in July of 2011 about what to expect from the new regulations.  The article outlined all of the changes we as manufacturers had to make to make the regulatory changes seamless to consumers.  You can read the article titled “New FDA Sunscreen Regulations.”

There are a number of new things to expect to see in place by June 12, 2012.  Rather than bore you with details, here are some bullets of the major changes

  • SPF used to mean only UVB protection.  Now manufacturers have to guarantee that protection is “Broad Spectrum” covering both UVA and UVB
  • All the outrageous SPF numbers (i.e. SPF 75, SPF 100+ etc.) are now illegal.  The top rating is now SPF 50+
  • The use of the term sublock is no longer allowed.  We can only use the term sunscreen
  • Cosmetic moisturizer like Solar Rx must comply with all of the regulation applying to sunscreens
  • Waterproof is a no no term.  Now a sunscreen can be water resistent, but the manufaqctuer must prove it and list the minutes of water resistent protectin on the label front
  • There is now a very specific Drug Facts label that has to appear on the back of the product with very spefici language.  Below is an image of our new label with the drug facts panel.  The panel looks very similar to the panel we have used for the last five years, but is different.

The Not New Solar Rx – Improved

Solar Rx is not new in the sense that we have not changed the formulation or concentration of the ingredients.  We have been in compliance with the new FDA regulations for the last two years.   That said, we do have a new labels and a few process changes. Read more…

Time To Get Wise – Dear 16 Year Old Me!

Published on May 1, 2012

Time To Get Wise

by Wendy Steele, Keys CEO

May is Melanoma month and it is not a celebration.

Around the world, there is a celebration at the beginning of May.  For me as a Melanoma survivor, it is a month where I give thanks for surviving.  It is the first day of May that I begin my summer long campaign to share my concerns, my knowledge and my experiences with people.  My goal is to save lives.

I am not cancer free, but I am free from cancer.  My advocacy has taken me to many places and I have met many survivors and unfortunately too many people that have lost loved ones, friends, spouces and parents.  What makes me sad is that they have also lost children.

The stories are wide and varied.  Here is just one subject that I hear all to often every May.

A frantic Mom and  a concerned Dad asking me for advice for their 16 and 17 year olds respectively.  Both the concerned parents were asking essentially the same thing: “How do I convince my teen daughter that she could wear anything and her skin will still look incredibly beautiful?”  Well, as it turned out, this was not just about teen fashion.   This was about preparation for the prom!  It turned out that the biggest issue was caused by the color of the dress and their teen’s steadfast belief that they could not possibly look beautiful in a white dress without tanned skin!  To prepare for their prom, both of these teens were insisting on sunless tanning.  I realized there must be thousands of parents going through this same drama, trying to win over the peer pressure their teens felt to spend the weeks before prom on tanning beds.

I received these requests for advice, because I am a melanoma skin cancer survivor and a skin health advocate.  I briefly pondered the fact that I do not  have a teen son or daughter…and I quickly found myself saying, but if I did I would share with them what I have learned in my life so far. Keys Natural Beauty Regime’s – When To Use What & Why

Published on April 26, 2012

I have always developed Keys products as solutions which interact with each other to build natural glowing and healthy skin.  When we created our regimes, they were simple and fairly obvious to understand what to use and when.  It was either wash your face add a moisturizer and an eeye cream for night and replace the mositurizer with a mositurizing sunblock during the day.

When we began to add toners, elixirs and fusions the complication factor went higher.   We recognizing that for people with dry skin they needed a more emollient foundation compared to someone with oily skin.  Even though we have only a few broad function products compared to other companies, we needed to communicate the functionality of each of our products and how they would fit into a day and night regime for people.

So, being a bunch of engineers, we set about to create three charts that show how to use our products, when to use them, why and in what order.  Like us they are simple and I hope easy to understand. Read more…

Dramatic Skin – Keys Reflex ProBiome – New Revolution

Published on April 21, 2012

Reflex ProBiome – The Back Story

Bob Root, Keys Chief Scientist & Founder

Reflex is one of the oldest new products we have.  I know that does not make sense.  It does to me because I developed Reflex almost five years ago and have been testing it since under the code name of Silken.  My problem was that the delay had nothing to do with developing the product, packaging or refinement.  My problem?  At least three of the ingredients I needed were not available in quantities greater than a few gallons.  If you keep in mind that I need thousands of liters or gallons to bring a product to market, a single liter is only good to prototype and lead to frustration.  As if it was a sign from the heavens at this place in space and time, providers showed up with production quantities of high grade organic virgin avocado oil, virgin Tamanu oil and our own ability to volume extract our Muras.  Later in the aricle below, all the ingredients are described and it was the fact that I can buy ample quantities of raw materials without compromising quality facilitate the launch of our new product by its real name.  Reflex ProBiome is unquestionably a big deal because of its ingredient quality.  Now we can produce it in manufacturable quantities.

Dramatic Skin – Keys Reflex ProBiome Anti-Aging Fusion

A biome is an ecological community operating together in harmony. Since we began Keys, we have treated the skin and its flora as a biome or eco-system. Reflex ProBiome feeds the community offering functional nutrients for the skin and friendly flora. Chemicals in skin care products destroy the skin’s flora and create imbalance on the skin. Reflex ProBiome is designed to restore the balance and make skin look remarkable.

Go To Keys Store for Reflex Probiome

Click Here to Go to Keys Store for Reflex Probiome

Reflex ProBiome is the culmination of four years of development combining modern skin age reversal without chemicals, hormones, synthetic steroids or fillers. Using Reflex ProBiome, you can expect reduction or elimination of fine lines, reduction of expression lines, skin toning, skin surface sculpting, firmness and more even skin color. The smooth luminescent finish and quick absorption into the skin are hallmarks of the quality of Reflex ProBiome. Simply we would place Reflex ProBiome in any competition against ‘any’ other anti-aging
or wrinkle solutions. Besides our confidence in Reflex ProBiome performance, it is completely made from natural unmodified ingredients.  At $24.95, it outperforms international chemical laden brands at a fraction of the cost.  The reason is simple 7 natural pharma grade ingredients compared to 50-75 ingredients that sometimes include hormones, Botox and exotic aggressive chemicals.

The secret of Reflex ProBiome is the combination of natural ingredients, the quality of the ingredients and the fact that all ingredients are whole and functional. Functional ingredients are those that are not over-processed and contain the whole properties from nature. Functional ingredients are on purpose and perform needed features and benefits to maximize skin appearance, hydration and skin health.

Reflex ProBiome is made from the purest organic oils assembled to replicate the skin’s own sebum while offering tetrapeptides, triglycerides, fatty acids, quadracarotenoids and nutrients that affect skin cell shape and health. Combining Organic Virgin Avocado oil, Organic Virgin Tamanu oil, Shea oil, ancient renowned Black Seed oil, Bergamot essential oil and the undisputable performance of Carrot Seed oil with our own Miras organic extract makes Reflex ProBiome a functional anti-aging product that is created from pure natural ingredients.

Omni – Functions and Uses

Published on February 7, 2012

Bob Root, Keys Chief Scientist & Founder

Functions and Uses

Keys products have many uses and functions.  When we develop a new product it is designed to solve problems and make people feel good.  We use pharmaceutical grade natural ingredients in therapeutic proportions to create products with functionality.  This functionality is broad and reaches across various parts of the body and often crosses over to pets.  This series of articles in this category is designed to feature the uses of the products.  This is how and why I design.

Omni – Skin Elixir

Below the description is a table showing many of the uses of Omni.

Omni is a technology term derived from the Latin word Omnis meaning “all.” When we began to develop AquaVit, it became clear that our Arianne ingredient had wonderful properties. Omni was originally being developed with an ingredient we named Miras. Miras is a special ingredient that comes from the fruit of the Forsythia plant and has very high levels of Oleanolic which is known to have many healing and cleansing properties for the skin without harming the skins probiotic EcoSystem.

To create Ariane, we blend & distill whole organic orange, lime, cranberry, cucumber, juniper berry, star anise, cassia cinnamon, anise seed, ginger and clove. Miras is created by blending the fruit, leaves and roots of the Forsythia plant to create a blend that is very high in Betulinic and Oleanolic . Betulinic is a naturally occurring pentacyclic triterpenoid which has anti-retroviral and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as a more recently discovered potential as an anticancer agent. Oleanolic or oleanic is a naturally occurring triterpenoid, widely distributed in food and medicinal plants, related to betulinic Read more…

Is Your Body’s Engine Running Optimally? Dr. Amy

Published on January 25, 2012

When your car’s engine is finely tuned and running optimally; you know it.  Likely that is the case with your own body also, and when it is out of tune you know that too.

Your thyroid gland is like the engine in a car – when it is under-active everything slows down leading to weight gain, fatigue, poor concentration, constipation, infertility, low libido, depression, slow heart rate and low body temperature.  When it is overactive your metabolism speeds up leading to weight loss, anxiety, insomnia, fast heart beat and loose stool. A Close Shave

Published on January 13, 2012

Close Shave?  I am often asked why we do not make a shave cream or shaving soap.   My answer?   We already do!

I was recently at a farmers market in the California Desert and asked by a man who complained of razor stubble and bumps from his shaving cream.  He asked if we would develop a shave cream that was all-natural, would not burn his skin, would not chafe, would not dry his skin and would not drag like other natural shave creams.   I said we already do and a lot of men and women use this special product every day.   Smiling, I told him that it was our Mangrove Shampoo!Remember that Keys believes in making products that solve problems and make people feel good.  This is our mantra.  We also say that our products do many things beyond what the label says.

Skin ‘Sees’ UV Light, Starts Producing Pigment

Published on January 5, 2012

A healthy glow. Human melanocyte skin cells fluoresce as their calcium signaling spikes after exposure to ultraviolet light and retinal, a key step in producing melanin. This led researchers to discover rhodopsin receptors in skin, which detect UVA light. (Credit: Image courtesy of Brown University)

ScienceDaily (Nov. 3, 2011) — In a new study, biologists report that melanocyte skin cells detect ultraviolet light using a photosensitive receptor previously thought to exist only in the eye. This eye-like ability of skin to sense light triggers the production of melanin within hours, more quickly than previously thought, in an apparent rush to protect against damage to DNA.

For most people, tanning seems a simple proposition. A naturally light-skinned person lies in the sun for hours and ends up as bronzed as a Jersey Shore star. To scientists, the reaction of skin to ultraviolet light is more mysterious. A new study demonstrates that skin detects UVA radiation using a light-sensitive receptor previously found only in the eye and that this starts melanin production within a couple of hours. Until now, scientists only knew that melanin production occurred days after UVB radiation had already begun damaging DNA.

“As soon as you step out into the sun, your skin knows that it is exposed to UV radiation,” said senior author Elena Oancea, assistant professor of biology in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology, Physiology, and Biotechnology at Brown University. “This is a very fast process, faster than anything that was known before.”

Scientists believe that melanin protects the DNA in skin cells against damage from UVB rays by absorbing the incoming radiation. It isn’t perfect, which is why people must use sun block. But the new study in the journal Current Biology shows that the body mounts its defense much sooner, well before it becomes apparent in the form of a tan.

Scientists Use Laser Imaging to Assess Safety of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles in Sunscreen

Published on December 28, 2011

Yellow color represents skin autofluorescence excited by 405 nm; Purple color represents zinc oxide nanoparticle distribution in skin (stratum corneum) excited by 770 nm, with collagen-induced faint SHG signals in the dermal layer. (Credit: Biomedical Optics Express.)

ScienceDaily (Nov. 30, 2011) — Ultra-tiny zinc oxide (ZnO) particles with dimensions less than one-ten-millionth of a meter are among the ingredients list of some commercially available sunscreen products, raising concerns about whether the particles may be absorbed beneath the outer layer of skin. To help answer these safety questions, an international team of scientists from Australia and Switzerland have developed a way to optically test the concentration of ZnO nanoparticles at different skin depths. They found that the nanoparticles did not penetrate beneath the outermost layer of cells when applied to patches of excised skin.

The results, which were published this month in the Optical Society’s (OSA) open-access journalBiomedical Optics Express, lay the groundwork for future studies in live patients.

SK!N What’s Normal pH?

Published on December 6, 2011

by Bob Root, Keys CTO

There is another book on the horizon for us.   The working title is simple, “SK!N”.   After Chemical-Free Skin Health was published, I started to get so many questions that focused more on “what to do” than what is wrong.  Yes, there will be a chapter about the negative effects of chemicals in products.  The majority of the book are things that we should be doing to improve skin health which has a direct connection to youthful appearance and beauty.

These articles are snippets from the book which are triggered by questions that I get that I think are important now!  Books just have this tendency to stretch things out a bit too far.

Like all good citizens, I have a disclaimer.  For future reference, I once had a professor that said, “Ask Root the time of day and he will lecture you on the origin of time.”  So forewarned is forearmed.  ;-]…..There are no simple answers and no simple questions when it comes to Skin!

Bob

I had a medical colleague ask me what she thought was a simple question.  “What is the normal pH of the skin?”  Remember there are no simple questions or answers.

Bob’s Answer, Part of the problem we find with all medicine is the use of the term “normal.”  Nowadays, the gaps in normal are quite large and do have some ethnic bias.  The ethnic shift is primarily food type consumed.  The other interesting thing is that in the last ten years or so, the gap has widened.

The News Is Not All Bad!

Published on August 22, 2011

Bob Root, Keys Chief Scientist & Founder

I must admit that I have been CNN Free for nearly tens years. Really!  I find myself working at looking at the world through positive lenses.  I have found that watching things out of my control affects my overall health.  This is not an “ignorance is bliss” approach to living as much as it is a focus on what I can effect, affect and control.

For some time now, I have been afflicted with the belief that much of our health is not about doctors, prescription or even prevention.  As I have studied, for my own life, I have found that health and specifically skin health, are directly relates to changing behaviors and realizing that it is not just about what we put into or on our body, it is how we do it and exercising the critical systems of the body.  Simply, just eating right and going to the gym are minor things and pale in comparison to focusing on our physical, mental and endocrine body balance.   Read more…

Skin Cancer & “The Ugly Duckling” …Hold the Mayo! (Update May 21st)

Published on May 21, 2011

WISDOM FROM “UGLY DUCKLINGS” by Wendy Steele  (Original Post May 9, 2011…See updates below)

My recent experience with several “ugly ducklings” has once again put a bright spotlight on my desire and responsibility to share my personal wisdom about skin health.

So far in this month of May, I have had the pleasure to personally talk to and meet many of our mid-west customers during multiple special events.  At one event I was wearing several flesh-colored bandage strips on my upper chest and self-consciously made sure that I covered those strategically with clothing, as I did not want to reveal those ugly little bandages.  I thought later that perhaps I would have been better off letting them show, because then I could share more personally my own experiences with “ugly ducklings”.   Knowledge is a powerful thing. Gluten Sensitivity: Is something You Are Eating Making You Sick?

Are you eating something everyday that could be making you sick?  I was!  During my second year of medical school I was diagnosed with Graves Disease, an autoimmune disorder that caused my thyroid to be overactive.  Each night before going to bed I would eat two pieces of sprouted whole wheat toast so that I could make it through the night without losing weight.  Little did I know that each night I was poisoning myself.  At that time, I was not aware of the gluten / autoimmune thyroid connection and my intolerance to gluten. Understanding UVA & UVB

You are what you apply – to your skin!

Published on March 11, 2011

You are what you apply – to your skin! What’s in your body lotion?

You’ve heard the old adage “you are what you eat.” Now I’d like to add another to that. “You are what you apply.” To your skin, that is!  Substances that affect your overall health and wellbeing don’t simply work their way through your system by travelling the gut alone.  An often-overlooked route – the transdermal (through the skin) route – allows substances ranging from the beneficial to the bad to enter your bloodstream and circulate throughout your body.  So, if you are what you eat, and you are what you apply, the question is:  what are you? AguaVit & Omni – Two New Functional Ingredient Products From Keys

Published on March 10, 2011

Keys Skip Generation Technology – Blended Whole Botanicals

by Bob Root  Keys Technologist

We are about to introduce two new products that represent a significant advancement for us and the industry.  AguaVit and Omni are two new products coming soon that employ a remarkable change for us in how we produce products that offer functionality, efficacy and performance.

Traditionally, companies blend ingredients to create a new product.  These can be oils, essential oils, extracts and blends of ingredients that were separately processed.  Often these ingredients are estered or separated and refined for a specific function.  For example, Vitamin E can be refined from vegetables  to look for and extract only a portion of the Vitamin E or the creation of a Tocopherol substance using refining processes.   Then many ingredients with separated functionality are blended together to create some action.  This is a lot of work and I continually question separating components of any natural substance to increase its intensity.  Deriving an intense form of Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) from fruit like apples sounds natural, but it is not.  The intense action of an AHA burns the skin to exfoliate rapidly with many consequences beyond red skin.  So it true of many estered ingredients. New 15ml Glass Eye Butter in Front of the Former Plastic 15ml

We now have a new 15ml glass jar for Eye Butter that is physically smaller on the outside and contains the same amount of product inside.  Our older plastic acrylic jar gives way to a new glass jar manufactured for us in Germany by legendary crystal glass manufacturer Stolzle.

Like many companies, when we started, our choice in packaging containers was limited.  We searched for  a lead-free glass container for the last three years and finally found one that is smaller on the outside and holds the same amount of product on the inside.  More important, it is glass which permits us to use steam to sterilize the container before filling.  Add that it is 100% recyclable and you have our new Eye Butter 15 ml jar. Bob Root Begins Book Tour! Asks! Are We Killing Our Skin’s Ecosystem?

Published on February 28, 2011

Chemical-Free Skin Health is the book written by Bob Root that is a compilation of all his experiences being on the road with Keys customers.  The book answers the most commonly asked questions as well as proposing some radical ideas about skin health.   Bob features information about the Human Microbiome Project and the nearby National Institutes of health that is a spin-off of the human genome project.

Of all the points Bob makes in the book, the one that drives his continued passion is his deep concern that the chemical bactericides used as preservative in most skin care and household products are destroying the natural ecosystem on our skin.  Parabens and Triclosan used as preservatives and antibacterial agents is an undiscriminating killer of the probiotics on our skin.  This subject is so important to Bob that he has made it the focal point of his book tour which begins in March. The Future of Medicine is NOW!

Published on February 25, 2011

The future of medicine is now.

If I asked you to describe your ideal physician – what would he or she “look” like?  Would she be compassionate and empathic?  Would she meet with you for a hour or maybe even two? Would she listen attentively to every detail of your health history knowing it’s interconnected like a web and everything is a clue into your present state of health?  Would she be knowledgeable about nutrition, environmental toxins and stress reduction, and more importantly, spend time talking with you about these things?  Would she be concerned with preventing disease and getting to the root cause of your illness instead of just treating the symptoms with a pill? Would it be a healing partnership rather than a hierarchal relationship? Read more…

UltraHealth…What A Concept! A Real BHAG!

Published on February 18, 2011

UltraHealth…What A Concept!  A Real BHAG!

by Bob Root, Keys technologists & founder

In tech, we had a phrase that we used to differentiate really big projects.  BHAG stands for a Big Hairy Audacious Goal.  When I helped to start Keys, we had some big hairy goals.  Universal Wellness was perhaps the biggest.

Remember, I am from high tech engineering, a practicing quantum physicist and a dreamer.  Ergo a futurist who believes anything is possible.  The adage that anything new is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration simply means to me that usually one person or a few have the spark of an idea and then it takes many more people working hard over a period of time until the rest of us get it.  In all endeavors, we all are both leaders and followers at some point in time.  The concept of Universal Wellness is not new, but it certainly is becoming a BHAG with many leaders and many followers of Natural  and Functional Medicine.

Mehmet Oz (Dr. Oz) and I have a similar BHAG.  To put ourselves out of business.  Universal  wellness will do that.  Read more…

Wendy’s #1 Life Rule:  Simplify!

Keys Products Have Many Uses!

We design products that can simplify your life.  At Keys we think differently!

Over six years ago, when we started designing and manufacturing skin health products, we had a fundamental belief that we could invent products that would solve skin issues and make people feel good.  We were inspired by our imagination and explored the use of revered healing natural ingredients so that each of these products effectively would have more than one use.  We believed they should be simple, safe and make life less complex every day.   What a concept and it is our reality! New RediCare Locking Sprayer

Published on January 8, 2011

We are pleased to announce the next generation sprayer head for our RediCare product.  The innovations for this new design development are a finer mist spray, more even and less pressure required to operate and a new integrated locking mechanism.

New RediCare Sprayer Integrated Lock

Most people quickly notice the new locking mechanism.  The prior sprayer used a “wishbone” clip that kept the pump from operating while in a bag, backpack or pocket.   The problem with the old design is that the small clip was easily lost.  In the process of developing the next generation sprayer, we sought all the new features plus an integrated lock.  As simple as it seems, it took us a long time to bring the design to the market.

Below is a short video that shows the operation of the locking latch.  Merely push the button from the right of the pump to open the sprayer for operation and a second push from the left to latch it closed and prevent accidental discharge of the pump. Read more…

Published on December 23, 2010

Keys now selling Jonathan Green Rootine  hair care products

By Bob Root

The rumor is true!  Keys is now marketing part of the Jonathan line.

About four years ago Keys started growing as a new name in Hollywood because of our high-definition natural foundations, Eye Butter, soaps and sunblock.  The industry began to realize that they could now have  skin care products that out performed conventional chemical laden products.  It was a natural progression for them to want hair care and makeup that out performed conventional products.
